Mosque Times by Sirat privacy notice

What personal data Mosque Times by Sirat processes and why.

Last updated: 25 July 2026

Mosque Times by Sirat is an independent, non-commercial service operated in the United Kingdom by Mohammud Ali. The operator is the controller of the personal data described here. Contact: [email protected].

This notice covers the directory website and UK Mosque Jamaat Directory API under sirat.uk/mosques. The Sirat app and its API are covered by the Sirat privacy notice.

Browsing, searching, and location

When you use the website or public API, network providers necessarily process your IP address, browser or client details, requested URL, time, and security/routing information. A search URL may contain the place name, postcode, or coordinates you entered and can therefore also appear in your browser history. The Directory application does not keep a routine public access log or a record of individual browsing journeys.

Location is optional. Your browser asks before sharing it, and the Directory receives it only after you choose the location feature. You can type a place or postcode instead. Application rate limits hold IP addresses in memory for about 60 seconds, then discard them.

If ordinary place search cannot resolve a UK postcode, the Directory may ask Postcodes.io from the server. Postcodes.io receives the postcode and Sirat server's IP address, not the visitor's IP address. Successful results are cached in memory for up to seven days and failed results for up to five minutes.

Minimal aggregate analytics

The Directory counts successful page and API requests, broad response-time and status bands, broad referral categories, searches by typed-or-location mode and result-count band, mosque and city page views, and selections of maps, directions, mosque websites, and correction links. This is used only to understand demand, find failed searches and technical problems, and improve the service.

Search text, postcodes, coordinates, full URLs and referrers, browser details, IP addresses, and reusable visitor identifiers are not written to the analytics database. Mosque activity is never linked to a visitor identifier. The Directory does not build profiles, infer religion, follow people between sites, or use analytics for advertising or personalisation.

Daily visitor numbers are estimates. The server briefly transforms the network address already needed to answer a request using a secret that changes the result each day, then updates a fixed-size statistical sketch in which many visitors share each position. Neither the address nor its transformed value is retained. Shared networks, changing addresses, automated traffic, and service restarts mean the estimate is not an exact count of people.

Detailed daily counters and visitor estimates are retained for up to 90 days. Older counters are combined into monthly totals retained for up to 24 months. Analytics stays in a separate private database on the Directory's existing Hetzner hosting and is not included in the published dataset or given to an analytics or advertising provider.

Sirat relies on legitimate interests in maintaining and improving this free service. You can object without contacting us. The Directory also respects browser Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals.

Exclude my future visits from aggregate analytics. This stores one preference-only cookie for up to 12 months so the Directory can remember the objection. It is not used to identify you or measure activity.

Interactive map

The interactive map is optional. It does not load until you select Show map after the Mapbox disclosure. Loading it connects your browser to Mapbox. Mapbox receives your IP address, the mosque's map location, viewport, and technical request information, and uses browser local storage for a random identifier and aggregate usage measurement.

You can use the written address and external directions links without loading Mapbox. The map is not remembered for a later visit. After loading it, Hide map and clear Mapbox data removes the map and Mapbox storage created for this site. See Mapbox's privacy policy.

Cloudflare may use strictly necessary cookies or similar storage to provide security and bot protection. Sirat does not use analytics, advertising, or marketing cookies. The optional analytics-objection cookie is used only to remember that choice.

Corrections and contact

The correction form prepares an email in your own email app; the website does not submit or store the completed form. If you send it, Sirat and the services delivering the email receive your address, report, and attachments. Do not send identity documents or unnecessary sensitive personal information.

Personal correspondence and evidence are kept for up to 12 months after the matter is resolved unless needed longer for law or an active dispute. Deleted mail may remain in provider backups for up to a further 30 days. A non-personal record of the source checked, decision made, and change applied may be retained indefinitely.

Directory sources and internal records

The Directory obtains mosque identities, addresses, websites, timetables, and supporting evidence from public mosque/timetable sources and approved open datasets. It keeps source URLs, checksums, extraction results, accuracy decisions, corrections, and change history so published information can be explained, corrected, licensed, and rolled back.

These records normally describe mosques, public sources, and data-processing decisions, not private individuals. Non-personal source and accuracy history may be kept indefinitely. If a source or note includes a person's private contact details or other unnecessary personal information, Sirat removes or anonymises it when no longer needed—normally within 12 months after the related review is resolved—while keeping the non-personal decision and provenance record.

Why the information is used

Sirat relies on legitimate interests to provide, secure, maintain, measure, and improve an accurate public mosque-timetable service; answer enquiries; and protect legal rights. The effects on visitors are limited by avoiding accounts, routine access logs, advertising, marketing analytics, and individual activity records, and by keeping location optional. Information may also be used where necessary to comply with law or handle a legal claim.

The Directory does not profile visitors or infer their religion. Searches return the requested results; only non-identifying search summaries and subsequent mosque selections are counted to improve search and directory coverage.

Providers and international processing

  • Hetzner, in Germany, hosts the Directory and its databases.
  • Cloudflare proxies and protects the public pages and therefore processes visitor IP addresses, requested URLs, and security/routing information.
  • Mapbox provides the optional map after the visitor selects Show map.
  • An email-service provider delivers and stores support and correction email.
  • Postcodes.io, operated by Ideal Postcodes, receives server-side postcode lookups.

Sirat does not sell personal data. These providers may process some information outside the UK under their own privacy and transfer arrangements.

Your rights

Depending on the circumstances, UK data protection law gives you rights to access, correct, erase, restrict, or object to use of your personal data, and to receive some data in a portable form. You have the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests.

Email [email protected] to exercise a right or make a complaint. The Directory may have no retained application record that can identify an ordinary visitor. You may also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
